The Journey Begins

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” CS Lewis

Hey, friend!  Thanks for stopping by to find out more about The Approachable Life! I’m Katie.

Welcome to my site.  I’m super flattered that you found your way here and are a little interested (or maybe just a tad nosy) in finding out more about me and what The Approachable Life has to offer!  I also have a YouTube channel called The Approachable Life and would love for you to subscribe to that and be a part of the entire community we are busy building here!

Fast, fun facts about me. I love being a wife and mom to 3 kids. We live a fast, FULL life these days. Kids sports, music lessons, activities… My head hits the pillow most nights happily exhausted.

Some might say I have a gift for humor (and some disagree). I come from a long line of whit and sarcasm, so not everyone appreciates my humor. If you stick around long enough, you might be offended or caught off guard by this…here’s my whole-hearted apology.

Listening and connecting are my favorite.

Get me around a group of people—whether I know them or not—and I’m like, “Dang, sista child, share with me! Give me the story of your awesome existence, your story of overcoming…your fears, concerns, joys, celebrations, triumphs and struggles. All of it. Inspire me! Convict me! And please let me love on you and appreciate you for having the courage to cut through the superficial convo to welcome me into your trusted space!”

Or if you make eye contact with me long enough in the checkout line, I’ll strike up a conversation with you.

I just love stories. Your stories. You learn a lot about people from the story they tell. Which angle they pursue, where they are emotionally and spiritually. What their belief system is.

I guess you could say, I’m a people person.

Love and belonging.

I believe people are dying for authentic connections that don’t always involve a “like” button. These days our self worth is often measured by followers and likes or who did or didn’t comment on a post. But I am looking for real connections and helping others build that, too.

I’m more into a priority-driven over popularity-driven life—What feels right for me and my family. Discovering what authentic and unique message God created me for to contribute to the world. I love seeing others pursue their unique journey as well.  This starts at home for me with the hunk-a-hunk burning love-of-my-life man and our 3 above average in looks and talents children (tested against my bias by their grandparents). I want to see them live a life full out on the path God paved for them. And I want that for you, too!

So by now you probably want to hear about The Approachable Life! I believe God created us for community to love one another and help one another. I think that sums up our purpose here on earth. But in my young adult life, I have often felt unloved, disconnected, frustrated, and alone.  Challenges in several areas of my life have improved only when I found and felt genuine love and connection. Most of the time, it was hard to find. And if I found it, it was also difficult to approach. I don’t want that to be the case for me, you, or anyone!  My mission is to build a community that embraces our unique gifts and talents, how we are wired, our physical, spiritual, emotional make up so that we can face tough parts of life together and help each other grow in those areas!

Fitness & Food

(((Lord have mercy, look at all those Fs. I contemplated naming this community, The Completely F’d Up Life……but I didn’t want to lose you before I gained you.)))

…..but the fact is, it’s true. I want to “F up” my life. I want those “F” categories to be elevated. Life begins the moment you start transforming in those areas.  But don’t they seem daunting?  Like holy smokes, how could I ever get a grip on one, let alone all, especially since I haven’t showered in days, I have used more than the recommended dosage of dry shampoo today, and I’m not sure if the laundry will catch up fast enough so the kids may have to turn their underwear inside out tomorrow???

If that’s you, too, I want to walk with you, talk with you, and laugh our way to a better life. We are not meant to tackle life alone. It’s too much to manage alone. I need you. And possibly, you need me too!

So here we are. The speed dating round to see if you want to hang out here and connect more. I have felt a strong call to share my unique journey and resources with others and to CONNECT WITH OTHERS who …

***Struggle with faith, what it means, and how to practice it

***want to know more about the Catholic faith, specifically

***want to cut through confusion and overload of the vast information out there in any area you feel challenged

***Yearn for authentic friendships in an overly disconnected world

***want to see God show up in finances, fitness/health, friendships, …pretty much everywhere, especially where it feels really hard right now

***want to find peace and joy in hot pursuit of the proverbial “meaning of life”

***want to connect with me and are ok if I fail at life more times than not, appear to be a tad scatter-brained, cuss a little (I’m workin on it), and love me some wine

Is this you? Then join me!

I should warn you…I have a stack of probably 13 books at the ready (and 37 podcasts in que)—about the above mentioned topics—so I’m CLEARLY not claiming perfection or to be an expert, but only that I am in pursuit of what makes sense for me. There is always room to grow and more to know. Please don’t expect stuffy, pretentiousness, or perfection here. Not happening. I will disappoint you and/or offend you if you hang around me long enough. So consider this your formal apology for any of my slip ups. Also, what works for me, may not work for you. That might actually happen a lot.  Aristotle said, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” So here’ s the disclaimer to trust your gut and apply what makes sense to you in what you find in these blogs and vlogs!

If you’re on board and made it to round 2 of speed dating,  here are some things you might find interesting about me…or not. Your choice.

  1. I live next door to my parents and missed the boat by one generation on having my own sitcom “Everybody Loves Katie”….but I live it daily….
  2. I changed majors more times in college than the average adult changes underwear in a two week span.  And after a gazillion credit hours scattered across just about every field, I landed a degree in English with a secondary education endorsement.  Special endorsement in PE. Taught for 7 years before leaving that to pursue a family life and an in home business.
  3. I am a recovering crossfit addict who will randomly stop what I’m doing at home to do handstands against a wall.
  4. I Amazon prime so hard that one time my son asked, “Mommy, can you buy me that dinosaur piggy bank I want from the brown truck?” (he thinks the truck is an actual store)
  5. I think that ranch should be the universal condiment. I love sour cream and cheese like they could be family. And yet I find myself facing dairy intolerances–along with gluten, dairy, and soy.
  6. I was raised with 3 older brothers and 2 boy cousins next door and played sports—soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis– my whole life—including tennis and basketball through college—so at times, I can be just a bit, ahem, competitive.  That might also why I may be a little “rough around the edges” at times. I can still mortify my mother with my crude comments/behaviors ocassionally. Work in progress here.
  7. My birthday is in May, and I’m a Gemini. And while I don’t believe in astrology predictions, I do pretty much lean towards the dueling personality description. Sometimes, it feels as if there is no middle ground for me; I’m either on one extreme or the other. Ask my hubs. He *loves* this about me! I think he has referred to me as bat #^*@ crazy on multiple occasions. I like to call it passion.  I keep life interesting.

Just a few of my favorite quotes:

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” CS Lewis

“Man fully alive is the Glory of God.” – Saint Irenaeus

“If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” Mother Teresa

“You sit on a throne of lies. You smell like beef and cheese.” Buddy the Elf

Holy guacamole!! You’re still here.  We were meant to be friends—or you are just really bored. Ha!  I cannot wait for you to stalk me on all forms of social media and begin connecting with me!!!
